Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has called for a stronger and more effective collaboration between Rivers and Bayelsa States, emphasizing the importance of mutual development and shared progress. Fubara made the statement during a courtesy visit by Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Saturday.
The Governor underscored the historical connection between the two states, recalling that many of the early leaders of Rivers State hailed from Bayelsa before the state was split. He highlighted that even after Bayelsa became a separate entity, many of its people continued to live in Rivers, further emphasizing the importance of fostering stronger ties for the collective benefit of both states.
Governor Fubara explained that for any development project to succeed in Rivers State, a healthy relationship with Bayelsa is crucial. He noted that sustainable development efforts cannot be isolated but should include collaborative actions with neighboring states, especially Bayelsa, to ensure broader success.
“I believe that for any development initiative in Rivers to truly thrive, there must be a strong, continuous partnership with Bayelsa. Our relationship needs to grow and be strengthened, as this will benefit the people of both states,” Governor Fubara said.
The Governor also pointed out the importance of Bayelsa State’s leadership in ensuring the success of the Bayelsa-Rivers-Akwa Ibom-Cross River (BRACE) Commission. He urged Governor Diri, now serving his second term, to take an active role in revitalizing the BRACE Commission to enhance collaboration among the South-South states. Governor Fubara suggested that this cooperation would not only address local development issues but would also contribute to addressing regional security challenges.
“The BRACE Commission must be vibrant and active. We need to make sure that it works towards solving common challenges and strengthening the bonds between the South-South states,” Fubara said. “If we are all working towards sustainable development, it will have a ripple effect across the region.”
Governor Fubara stressed that strengthening the relationship between Rivers and Bayelsa States will have far-reaching benefits for both states, with enhanced economic opportunities and security. He encouraged Governor Diri to prioritize this agenda and to ensure that it remains a focal point of their respective administrations.
“The key to meaningful change in our states lies in mutual cooperation and understanding. I urge you, Governor Diri, to take up this challenge, as it is a responsibility we must embrace to create lasting impact before we leave office,” Fubara stated.
Fubara also reflected on the limited time governors have in office, noting that this realization should inspire them to govern with love and humility. He expressed that respect from the people should come naturally, as true leadership is built on trust and shared progress, rather than on force.
The meeting between the two governors, during this festive period, was seen as a significant gesture of solidarity and partnership. Governor Fubara expressed hope that the Christmas visit would strengthen the bond between the two states, signaling a renewed commitment to mutual development. He believes that such unity will lay the foundation for greater cooperation in tackling both current and future challenges faced by Rivers and Bayelsa.
The cordial visit has reignited conversations about the potential of greater cooperation between the South-South states, particularly in the areas of economic development, security, and social welfare. Governor Fubara’s call for action underscores his commitment to leaving a legacy of collaboration that will benefit not only Rivers and Bayelsa, but the entire South-South region.
